Blaze hits Dumfries retail centre

A JOINT fire service and police investigation is underway into a major fire at an out-of-town shopping centre at Dumfries.

Firefighters spent 18 hours at the outbreak which began in the Brantano footwear store at the Peel Centre in Lockerbie Road about 6.30 pm on Saturday.

Smoke spread to neighbouring units and a number of animals were carried to safety from the Pets at Home chain store by staff.

A spokeswoman for Dumfries and Galloway Fire and Rescue Service revealed they were alerted by an automatic fire alarm system after the stores had closed for the evening.

Units attended from Dumfries, Annan, Lockerbie, Dalbeattie and a special turntable ladder vehicle and crew was brought in from Cumbria Fire Service in Carlisle.

Firefighters remained at the scene until lunchtime on Sunday.

Assessors are expected to arrive this week to estimate the cost of the damage.
