CONTROVERSIAL . . . one of the new signs at the Dumfries town limits

Officials see red over pink signs

BRIGHT pink road signs welcoming visitors to Dumfries have left Council officials with red faces.

The seven new notices were installed on roads leading into the town last week at a cost of just under £6000, with the garish hue explained as being due to a problem in the manufacturing process.

A spokesman for Dumfries and Galloway Council said: “The signs should be the council’s corporate purple colour.

“However, when that paint ral tone was applied to aluminium signs the colour appears to be pink.”

One Doonhamer recalled his shock when he first saw one of the signs.

He said: “I couldn’t believe it when I saw it. This giant pink sign at the side of the road, and it’s not just pink, it’s bright pink -- a real shocker.

“You have to wonder what sort of impression it’s making on visitors. In all the years I’ve been driving I’ve never seen anything like it.”

He added: “It’s such a distraction I wouldn’t be surprised if someone drove off the road while looking at one of these.”

Nith Ward councillor Colin Smyth acknowledges the motorists’ concern.

He said: “The worry is that you’ll be that busy looking at the bright signs that you hit a lamppost.”
