Lucky escape for McNish

RACE ace Allan McNish is lucky to be alive after a horrific 120 mph crash at the Le Mans 24 Hours race earlier this month.

The Flying Scotsman’s dreams of a hat-trick win were crushed when his Audi R18 TDI collided with a GT car in the ‘La Chapelle’ section of the track just 51 minutes into the twice-around-the-clock race.

Spectators looked on in horror as the new closed-cockpit sportscar spun off the track and hit the crash barrier catapulting it into the air before it slammed back to the ground just metres from the media pen.

The 41-year-old driver, who hails from Dumfries, said: “You don’t have any feelings at the moment of impact. You know it is going to be an accident and at that speed you are just hanging on.

“The actual impact itself was quite heavy going in backwards. Once the accident had stopped all I was thinking about was getting out of the car."
