Lockerbie bombing probe scaled-up
EXTRA police officers have been called in to help as the Lockerbie bombing inquiry is scaled-up.
More officers within the Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary force have been assigned to the case following a regime change in Libya.
The only man ever convicted of the terrorist attack which claimed a total of 270 lives is Libyan Abdelbaset al-Megrahi.
He was released from a Scottish prison on compassionate grounds almost two and a half years ago after being diagnosed with terminal cancer and given just months to live.
However, he has outlived his prognosis and is still alive in Tripoli.
The development in the case came following the overthrowing and death of Col Muammar Gaddafi last year.
A spokesman for Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary this week confirmed the Crown Office asked the National Transitional Council (NTC), through the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, for assistance with the investigation.
He said: “In particular the Crown asked the NTC to make available any documentary evidence and witnesses, which could assist in the ongoing enquiries.
“The Transitional Government of Libya has agreed to allow officers from Dumfries and Galloway police to travel to Libya for enquiries into the involvement of others with Mr Megrahi in the Lockerbie bombing.”
The investigation continues to be led by Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary on behalf of the Crown Office and the force spokesman said they will pursue any lines of enquiry that become available.
He added: “As the investigation remains live and in order to preserve the integrity of that investigation, it would not be appropriate to offer further comment.”
