Galloway broadband boost
NEXT GENERATION broadband is making inroads into the region with another 4850 homes and businesses now connected.
And Dumfries is next in line to enjoy download speeds of up to 20Mbps, after Castle Douglas and Dalbeattie joined Newton Stewart in upgrades to local telephone exchanges.
BT Scotland director Brendan Dick said: “This is an important step forward for Castle Douglas and Dalbeattie.
“In these challenging economic times, faster broadband can help businesses become more competitive, find new customers and work more flexibly as well as greatly improving the online services available to families, homeworkers and other internet users.”
The Dumfries exchange is due to be upgraded on February 29, along with Kirkcudbright, while Stranraer will make the leap on March 31.
The 20Mbps download speeds are more than double the limit previously available from BT, and about four times the existing average for Dumfries.
And the town is set to tap into speeds of an initial 40Mbps, rising to 80Mbps and potentially as high as 200Mpbs or even 1Gps thanks to the introduction of fibre optic broadband at some point in 2012.
